What is 3D decoupage?

Nowadays 3D decoupage (cut out) is an immensely popular hobby and it involves paper-cutting.
You need 4 to 6 copies of the same picture, a tube of silicon-kit, a hobby-knife and a lot of patience.Anton Pieck’s pictures are well suited for this art form. He designs his pictures in minute detail , in pretty colours. Moreover, he mostly paints nostalgic sceneries. As an art form it evolved in Italy to imitate oriental lacquer work. Nowadays, with or without the use of a manual, you can create your own art-work by carefully cutting out, shaping and assembling the various pieces.

Basis Instructions for 3D decoupage

English:

1 Cut out the pieces with a hobby-knife; write the number at the back. Use a cutting-mat. The blade of your knife must be sharp.
2 Go along the edges of the cutout pieces with a 4B pencil. This will eliminate cutting lines.
3 Look carefully how you shape the various pieces. How do you shape the front and back of a basket? How do you shape a tulip or a daffodil? Shape the pieces along a round object (a round pen or pencil). Crease when necessary: a roof of a house; the house itself, etc. etc.
4 Attach the cutout pieces with a ‘blob’ of silicon-kit. Use a toothpick or better: a ‘sate-stick’ to apply the kit. On large areas the ‘blobs’ should be 1½ to 2cm apart.
5 Build up the pieces in numerical order.
6 Varnish and frame the picture.

een sateh-stokje
4
werk netjes en secuur.; vermijd vlekken.

Success!

Varnishing: with high-gloss 3D varnish.

Apply the varnish thickly. Dab it on and only brush on a small area at –a-time.
Don’t try to brush out the varnish backwards and forwards like household paint.Do not varnish the background.
Do not varnish large areas.
Keep the picture flat.
Check the next day: if necessary varnish again. Manuals. For a beginner a manual is essential.
Follow the instructions. What is most important is to look and think for yourself so that you understand what you are doing.

*part of a manual

When you ‘build up’ your picture you begin by no. 1 until you finish with the last number. Have the frame with you. You can check then whether you build up too high or too low.

Additional Information

Overcutting
Sometimes sections from an adjacent area must be included in the cut; this is called an “overcut” and is used to disguise certain edges when further layers are added.
This is indicated on the manual with a cross and arrow.

Frames
The lengths of material of which the frames are made are specially commissioned. They have a recess of 28mm and 40mm. High enough to house your decoupage.
They are assembled in our workshop with great care and craftsmanship.

Not in the sun!
Never ever hang your "Shadowbox" in the sun!
